Abstract: The concept of Ayurvedic cosmetic toxicity focuses particularly through the lens of Ayurvedic principles under the term Gara Visha (slow poisoning), which refers to the slow poisoning effects of hair cosmetics through cumulative exposure. This exposure can lead to various local and systemic health issues, including skin diseases and hair loss, which may be acute or chronic as per the severity of toxin exposure. Key historical references are made to Aacharya Sushruta in Kalpa Sthana, where he enumerates the harmful impacts of Gara Visha (different toxic cosmetic applications given by enemy) like Vishajushta Kanghi (poisoned comb), Vishkta Shiroabhyanga (poisoned hair oil massage), etc., highlighting their irritative chemical actions that damage hair shafts and follicles, and cause Granthi (scalp folliculitis) and hair fall by internal Doshas imbalance and Dhatu Vikaras. Currently, this Gara Visha aspect is associated with low- potency poisoning effects caused by long-term exposure to hair cosmetic chemicals. Hair fall management includes Shodhana (internal detoxification) and Shamana therapy (pacifying Ayurvedic therapy) with both local and systemic approaches, eg. Agada Yogas, Vishaghna Chikitsa (detoxifier treatment), scalp nourishment, as well as managing hormonal and stress factors, integrating the Vata-Pitta Doshic balance principles, according to the patient's condition. The synthesis of ancient Ayurvedic texts and modern research presents a comprehensive approach to understanding and managing the modern epidemic of hair loss attributed to these toxic exposures. In conclusion, implementing proper hair care and detoxification, along with the Nidana Parivarjana (avoidance of harmful substances), is emphasised to reduce the toxic effects of Visha on hair health.
