<abstract><title>Abstract</title>
Objective: To evaluate the nephroprotective property of Alocasia macrorrhiza in murine models of gentamicin-induced nephrotoxicity. Methodology: 30 adult Wistar albino rats were divided into 5 groups of 6 rats each. Group I and II were controls (10 ml of 1% Gum acacia), Group III-V were tests, and received test drug ethanolic extract of Alocasia macrorrhiza (EEAM) leaves at doses of 100, 250, 500 mg/kg body weight, respectively. Except for group I, rats were injected intraperitoneally with Gentamicin (40 mg/kg). Test groups were treated with EEAM before and after Gentamicin injections. Blood was collected for analysis of renal parameters, and kidneys were sent for histopathological analysis. Results: In Group I, there was an increase in renal parameters indicating Gentamicin nephrotoxicity compared to the control, and the control was comparable in the EEAM-received groups. It was more significant at doses of 250 mg/kg and 500 mg/kg body weight than in Group II. Histopathology revealed significant changes in Group II, less marked in Groups IV and V (250 mg/kg and 500 mg/kg body weight doses). Discussion: Results showed significantly reduced blood urea and serum creatinine levels, but an increased serum uric acid level, with corresponding histopathological changes. This demonstrated the nephroprotective property of the ethanolic extract of Alocasia macrorrhiza leaves at doses of 250 mg/kg and 500 mg/kg body weight. Conclusion: This study demonstrates the nephroprotective potential of Alocasia macrorrhiza at doses of 250 mg/kg and 500 mg/kg body weight. Further studies are required to investigate possible mechanisms and the hyperlipidemic effect of Alocasia macrorrhiza.
