<abstract><title>Abstract</title>
In the context of rising sedentary lifestyles and lifestyle-related disorders, the significance of regular physical activity has become increasingly important. The present article explores cycling as an accessible, sustainable, and effective form of exercise by integrating contemporary physiological perspectives with the Ayurvedic concept of Vyayama (physical activity). Traditionally regarded as both a means of transportation and a sport, cycling offers multidimensional benefits for physical, mental, and emotional health. From a biomedical perspective, cycling improves cardiovascular efficiency, enhances metabolic function, promotes lipid utilization, strengthens the musculoskeletal system, and regulates neuroendocrine activity through hormones such as growth hormone, catecholamines, and cortisol. It also contributes to improved respiratory function, immune competence, and psychological well-being by reducing stress, anxiety, and depressive symptoms. Regular cycling is associated with a decreased risk of chronic diseases, including obesity, type 2 diabetes mellitus, and coronary artery disease, thereby enhancing longevity and quality of life. The Ayurvedic framework provides a complementary understanding through the principle of Vyayama, which emphasises balanced physical exertion (Ardhashakti), maintenance of Dosha equilibrium, and proper functioning of Srotas. The article correlates Medovahasrotas dysfunction in Sthaulya (obesity) with modern concepts of adiposity and metabolic imbalance. Cycling, as a form of Vyayama, is proposed to alleviate Kapha aggravation, stimulate Agni, improve tissue nourishment, and enhance overall vitality (Bala and Ojas). In conclusion, cycling emerges as a holistic, cost-effective, and sustainable intervention that bridges modern exercise physiology with Ayurvedic wisdom, promoting health, preventing disease, and improving overall quality of life.
