Abstract: Mental, neurological, and substance use disorders account for over 10% of the global disease burden, with limited access to treatment, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. In India, mental health disorders are highly prevalent, necessitating a more holistic approach to treatment. Ayurveda, an ancient system of medicine, emphasizes a psychosomatic approach to health, integrating physical and mental well-being. It classifies mental disorders (Manas Roga) based on disturbances in mental attributes (Sattva, Rajas, Tamas) and physiological imbalances (Vata, Pitta, Kapha). Disruptions in these elements contribute to conditions such as anxiety, depression, psychosis, and other psychosomatic disorders. This study highlights the necessity of integrating Ayurveda principles into modern psychiatric practices, considering its potential to address root causes, offer personalized treatments through Prakriti-based approaches, and provide evidence-based holistic interventions. Ayurveda's therapeutic framework includes pharmacological treatments (herbal formulations, Panchakarma) and non-pharmacological therapies such as Sattvavajaya Chikitsa (psychotherapy), Daivavyapashraya Chikitsa (spiritual therapies), and lifestyle modifications (Dincharya, Ritucharya). Given the limitations of conventional psychiatry, such as side effects, symptomatic focus, and accessibility challenges, Ayurveda presents a complementary strategy that aligns with global wellness trends. By incorporating Ayurveda principles into modern mental healthcare, there is potential for improved patient outcomes, reduced relapse rates, and enhanced accessibility. The integration of Ayurveda with contemporary psychiatric practices offers a promising pathway for a comprehensive, individualized, and effective approach to mental health management, addressing both physiological and psychological aspects in the 21st century.
