Abstract: The diabetes mellitus is a chronic, metabolic disease characterised by elevated blood glucose which leads overtime to serious damage to the heart, blood vessels, eyes, Kidneys and nerves. In the past 3 decades, the prevalence of type 2 diabetes has risen dramatically in countries of all income levels and hence a field visit was conducted among 10 Inherited Medical Practitioners of Kancheepuram and Thiruvallur districts, Tamil Nadu, India, in managing the diabetes mellitus. The Knowledge on medicines given by Inherited Medical Practitioners for managing diabetes mellitus were collected through questionnaire and personal interviews during field visits and the study documented about 18 traditional formulations used internally and 7 formulations used externally in managing diabetes.
